THE FISHERMANS COTTAGE

residential

An incredible project and brief from our client to transform an old, delapidated farm cottage into a contemporary comfortable dwelling with rustic charm that compliments its surroundings.

Such a transformation ! The cottage was falling apart when we started the project, with no roof in some places at all.

We set about re-designing the layout of the rooms, making it open plan living and more functional for a modern home away from home. The view from the living area out over the lawn towards the dam was a focal point so to maximize this we opened up that side of the house and added glass sliding doors the full width of the building as well as adding full height windows up to the apex of the roof.

The living area furniture was a mixture of beloved existing pieces plus a few new items that all worked together to give the space a natural lived in comfortable feel. We combined textures and patterns mixing rustic, hard and rough textures using timber and leather, with soft, plush materials eg: brushed cotton. Contrast is key.

Colour was really important for this project and shone through in the bedrooms with botanical wallpapers and printed fabrics to offset the neutral rustic tones of the natural building materials used for the construction of the cottage. A black and white modern interpretation of a cottage pane window design was used in the bathrooms juxtaposing the rustic living spaces.
